Mi unue legis ĉi tiun libron en la angla antaŭ longe kaj tre ĝojis kiam mi vidis, ke aperis esperanta traduko. Relegante ĝin en esperanto mi konstatis ke mi multe forgesis pri la intrigo do la traduko estis kvazaŭ freŝa libro por mi. Mi ŝategas la rakonton. Ĝi estas tre ĉarma kaj estas tre interese vidi la mondon tra la okuloj de homo kun nekutima percepto de siaj ĉirkaŭaĵoj. En kutima libro, oni plej ofte kunsentas kun la ĉefrolulo, sed en ĉi tiu libro mi havas la impreson ke mi pli kunsentis kun la aliuloj kun kiuj li interagis, ĉar ili komprenas detalojn kiujn li maltrafas kiam li rakontas okazaĵojn al ili, kaj ni kiel legantoj povas ankaŭ antaŭvidi la intrigon same kiel liaj najbaroj.

La traduko estas bonega. La tradukinto elektis esperantigi eĉ la varmarkojn kaj la nomojn de lokoj en Britujo, kio donas la impreson esti en paralela universo post la fina venko. Mi trovis ke kiam mi alkutumiĝis al tio ĝi faris la legadon pli plaĉa kaj glata. Impresis min la sukcesa esperantigo (aŭ anstataŭigo?) de vortludaj ŝercoj. Je unu momento la ĉefrolulo parolas pri tio, ke se oni faras kalkulon pri la literoj de nomoj de kelkaj homoj en la rakonto la sumo estas primo. La tradukinto lerte elturniĝis por elekti esperantigitajn nomojn de tiuj homoj por ke la kalkulo daŭre funkciu, eĉ per la esperanta alfabeto.

Mi ankaŭ rekomendus la esperantan tradukon se oni serĉas ion ne tro malfacilan por legi, ĉar la rakonto temas pri ĉiutagaj aferoj, kaj la rakontanto havas nekutiman kvazaŭ pli logikan manieron paroli, kio faras la libron pli facile komprenebla kompare al tradukoj de aliaj libroj.

I enjoyed reading this book. It starts off almost as like a detective novel but the intrigue soon dissolves into the background and in the end it is more like a portrait of a possible dystopian future without much of a story. Despite being published in 1966, it successfully predicts the problems we have now of running out of resources. However it blames this squarely on over-population rather than over-consumption and reads like a manifesto for increased access to birth control as the solution. I think this is what dates the book a little because I get the impression that we now have quite good access to birth control and education about that, at least where I live, yet we are still heading towards the catastrophic future predicted in the book. In a way the dystopia in the story seems almost reassuring viewed from a modern perspective where we are fed stories of catastrophic climate change and the extinction of the human race. At least in the book they somehow manage to get together and distribute enough food and water rations to everyone like a sort of socialism instead of just having an all out war and survival of the fittest to get access to the resources. Overall it’s a good book that is still relevant but doesn’t go far enough for a modern viewpoint.

Avec toutes les histoires de violences policières qu’on entend dans les journaux et ce que je vois de mes propres yeux pendant les manifs, j’ai pris ce livre de la bibliothèque pour essayer de comprendre comment on en est arrivé là. Je me retrouve avec un récit qui est bien écrit et se lit très vite. Par contre, je ne suis pas sûr que le travail soit bien accompli. L’auteur semble se vanter d’être le premier à avoir infiltré la police, ce qui donne l’impression que son intérêt était plus d’avoir ce prestige que de faire une vraie lutte contre les injustices. Je suis d’accord avec les autres commentaires que cette infiltration n’était peut-être pas vraiment nécessaire pour raconter la violence policière, et il aurait été plus intéressant d’interviewer des victimes et collectionner leurs témoinages. Ça aurait évité de gros problèmes au niveau moral que l’infiltration implique. Par exemple, l’auteur détaille une histoire où il est témoin d’un collègue qui tabasse un gamin innocent sans provocation et qu’ensuite le gamin porte plainte. L’auteur finit par mentir pendant son audition pour aider son collègue à cacher la bavure. L’auteur s’excuse de cette conduite douteuse en disant que s’il arrive à avoir la confiance de ses collègues il peut dénoncer encore plus de bavures. Mais finalement il n’en raconte pas beaucoup plus, il donne juste une image de violence quotidienne sans trop entrer dans les détails. En plus, il n’est resté que 4 mois dans ce poste et ne semble pas avoir besoin de construire beaucoup de confiance en ses collègues pour témoigner les violences, qui semblent juste être partout. Je suis un peu perplexe du fait que l’auteur a investi deux ans de sa vie pour préparer ce livre et a fini avec un récit qui semble être écrit vite fait. Je me demande s’il pouvait en écrire un deuxième livre pour entrer plus dans les détails de l’expérience, ou raconter la suite de ce qui s’est passé aux victimes.

This book is a real eye-opener to the way the internet has allowed misogyny to spread and become normalised whilst still remaining under the mainstream radar. I highly recommend reading it, especially to those responsible for teenage boys so that they can be more aware of the kinds of influence people are being regularly exposed to on the internet. It’s very impressive the lengths Laura Bates has gone through to research this book and the risk she takes of retaliations in order to get this message out. I was particularly impressed while reading that she braved going to an MRA meetup that had used an image of her as an enemy in the advertising. The book takes a fair amount of thick skin to get through, inducing horror at the detailed descriptions of terrorist attacks and infuriation at the idiotic and abhorrent ideas coming from the manosphere. I was relieved that it ends on a slightly more positive note with ideas and projects that are around to start tackling the problem and I left with a list of books to read and associations to follow to get a more positive version of masculinity.
