Andrew Einspruch's The Western Lands and All That Really Matters fantasy series was recommended to me on vegan Twitter so I thought I would start my journey with this short novella prequel - it's about 70 pages - to get a flavour of The Western Lands. Although with distinctive fantasy elements, the story reflects our own world but with insightful differences that illustrate problems ripe for change. I loved Einspruch's portrayals of his animal characters as full equals to their human counterparts. For example, a radish haulage business is owned and run by both BB, a human, and BdB, a horse. Such partnerships and friendships are an important theme of this book.
Just as important is the humour which had me giggling on pretty much every page. The Wombanditos themselves don't appear until about halfway through the story, but Jerome the Chipmunk is also a wonderfully entertaining character and Princess …
