Who poisoned the wealthy Emily Inglethorpe, and how did the murderer penetrate and escape from her locked bedroom? Suspects abound in the quaint village of Styles St. Mary--from the heiress's fawning new husband to her two stepsons, her volatile housekeeper, and a pretty nurse who works in a hospital dispensary. On the day she was killed, Emily Inglethorp was overheard arguing with someone, most likely her husband, Alfred, or her stepson, John. Afterwards, she seemed quite distressed and, apparently, made a new will--which no one can find. Nobody can explain how or when the strychnine was administered to Mrs. Inglethorp. High on Poirot's list of suspects are: John Cavendish, the elder stepson; Mary Cavendish, his wife; Lawrence Cavendish, the younger stepson; Evelyn Howard, Mrs. Inglethorpe's companion; Cynthia Murdoch, her protegee; and Dr. Bauerstein, a mysterious stranger who lives in Essex. All have motive and opportunity but only Poirot can discover the truth.

Siccome all’estate viene sempre associata la lettura dei gialli, io mi ero convinta che avrei dovuto leggere i miei primi libri di Agatha Christie tra giugno e agosto. Tutto molto bello – e strano, lo ammetto – peccato che ogni anno mi dimenticassi di prenotarli in biblioteca. Così sono riuscita a superare i trenta senza aver mai letto un romanzo o un racconto della celebre scrittrice, finché quest’anno con indomita volontà ne ho presi quattro tutti insieme. Quindi ne è falsa la pena di fare questo recuperone?

Se il signor Quin mi ha intrigata, Poirot mi ha lasciata piuttosto freddina. Non mi sento di liquidarlo né di essere troppo cattiva perché Poirot a Styles Court non è solo il primo romanzo con Poirot, ma proprio il primo romanzo giallo di Christie, quindi ci sta che non sia eccelso. Infatti, questo giallo non mi ha impressionata particolarmente, nessun personaggio ha davvero …

Infatti, questo giallo non mi ha impressionata particolarmente, nessun personaggio ha davvero catturato la mia attenzione e alcuni elementi mi sono sembrati omessi solo perché altrimenti sarebbe stato lampante fin da subito chi fosse l’assassinə.

Questa scelta mi è proprio sembrata un tentativo maldestro da parte di Christie di portare avanti l’indagine e svelare tutto alla fine: ma un detective deve avere delle buone ragioni per non svelare le sue carte e qui mi sono sembrate molto labili. Anche se, ammetto, rivelare informazioni sensibili a uno che fa una proposta di matrimonio a una tizia che conosce appena e che potrebbe essere un’assassina potrebbe non essere la migliore delle idee (per la cronaca, lei gli ride in faccia e lui ha pure il coraggio di rimanerci male e quella scena è forse la mia preferita di tutto il libro).

Sicuramente leggerò altri libri con protagonista Poirot perché sono certa che Christie ne ha scritti di migliori con lui protagonista: chissà se ci riuscirò prima della prossima estate. Ora che ho iniziato potrei riservarmeli anche per le vacanze di Natale.
