An enjoyable read

The Darker The Skies is the second of Bryan Prosek's Earth United young adult science fiction series after The Brighter The Stars which I have already read and reviewed. This book takes place about a year after the previous one and I liked the idea of a TV journalist recapping the earlier events as part of an anniversary countdown. The device is a good memory refresher without feeling to strongly of exposition. I felt overall that The Darker The Skies flowed much more smoothly as a novel. While there were a few information overload moments that slowed its pace, the plotting felt stronger and more plausible and I appreciated that the characters showed a greater depth and had matured as a result of their previous experiences.

Earth is again in desperate straits and under attack, this time from a conglomeration of pirates and a curious race of ethereal beings. I thought I could recognise the influence of big scifi films in some of the dialogue, as well as Uncle Frank's beloved Westerns of course, and several of Prosek's battle scenes had a cinematic quality to them. Perhaps the denouement chapters did wrap up rather too easily after all the build up to the show down, but on the whole I enjoyed reading The Darker The Skies.
