Stephanie Jane recenzis The Way To Remember de Martha Reynolds
A lovely novel

I enjoyed reading this 1970s coming of age story which recounts a decisive year in the life of poor little rich girl, Robin Fortune. I felt that Reynolds really captured Robin well and made her a sympathetic character with whom I could identify, especially in remembering my own careless attitudes to other people at the same age. Robin comes across as much younger than her nineteen years at the beginning of this story and it was interesting to see her grow in maturity as the months pass. I did think that Robin's own writing would have a more central role whereas actually the focus is on her blossoming relationships and self belief. She begins to understand the value of genuine friendships and to see that shallow surface impressions often mask deeper traumas.

I thought Reynolds did an excellent job of portraying the historical details of the New England town at this period. Her allusions to then-current music and films helped to set the atmosphere and I loved picturing everybody in their fashionable outfits! Robin's Mum particularly must have been quite a sight to behold! I was a little disappointed by the patriarchal moral tone of two particular storylines (which I can't be more specific about here for fear of inadvertently spoiling the plot) and felt that some narrative digressions weren't adequately enough explored to satisfy my curiosity, however these are minor points. Overall I thought that The Way To Remembrance was a lovely novel and I am delighted to have had this opportunity to read it.
