A Delicate Dance Of Souls started out aptly for me with Nicole and Matt meeting each other in the natural environment of a Wyoming campsite. Karen Hamilton really made the most of this tranquil location and I loved how I could clearly envisage the scenery from her detailed descriptions. Nicole and Matt are, independently of each other at first, taking a break from their everyday lives and I felt that their physical isolation from the world at large nicely reflected this. Of course there are still facilities to hand, especially the first of what would become many visits to diners, cafes and restaurants for all the characters throughout this novel. I was intrigued by how many deep conversations took place in close proximity to a hovering waitress or waiter. This created an interesting dynamic that highlighted for me the folie a deux aspect of Nicole and Matt's intense connection.

I shouldn't really keep rolling their names together because, despite their initial instalust, it isn't a foregone conclusion that these two will find their happy ever after together. Their relationship is the novel's focal point, but both have other potential partners in the wings - I liked Matt's ex-wife Amanda, but couldn't see the attraction of Nicole's former squeeze, Sam. As readers, we were frequently told what a great guy he is, but I couldn't help feeling that his passive-aggressive neediness was an unhealthy base for a long-term relationship. The central characters interact well with each other using believable dialogue and realistic motivations. Perhaps I could have done with more in the way of showing rather than telling because I did sometimes feel too distanced from the action, or disappointed that a vital moment had occurred off page so we only found out about it second hand.
However, mostly I was impressed with Hamilton's portrayal of Nicole's spiritual ideas. This is such an important and interesting thread in A Delicate Dance Of Souls and it makes her story quite unique in its outlook. The gentle overall pace suits the deeply profound conversations and I can imagine this story being of genuine help to a lot of people, as well as being a lovely romantic read.
