Continuando la obra de Hesse en orden de publicación —habiéndome saltado Gertrudis por no tenerlo a mano— se nota un avance en la calidad de la prosa del autor. Al contrario que en anteriores obras, nuestro protagonista, Johann Veraguth, se trata de un adulto, calculo que entre 40-50 años y pintor de bastante éxito.

Vive en una profunda pesadumbre debido a su distante relación familiar excepto con su amado hijo pequeño, Pierre, al que realmente adora. Esto le ha hecho centrarse en su trabajo de manera vehemente para apartar los pensamientos de su desdichada vida. Un día un amigo vuelve de la India e intenta convencerlo de que viaje con él, en esta tesitura se tendrá que enfrentar a si mismo para poder discernir si puede sacrificar todo en pos de reconducir su vida.

Teniendo como único escenario Rosshalde, la finca en la que vive, Hesse trata los sentimientos y emociones humanas de una manera profundísima, casi podríamos decir que en vez de Rooshalde, el lugar donde todos los hechos ocurren es en la mente y corazón del señor Veraguth y, aunque en menor medida, también podemos encontrar aquí un canto a la belleza de la naturaleza, siempre presente en cada libro.

I found this novel to be a beautifully quiet and thoughtful book. Like another recent read, An Amsterdam Affair, it is driven by art and the compulsion to create is a strong theme of the work. Veraguth substitutes artistic acclaim and success for happiness in domestic life choosing to seclude himself in his garden studio rather than working to repair his bitter marriage. Hesse understands his protagonist completely and, since finishing, I have read elsewhere that Rosshalde does reflect his own circumstances at the time of writing. His exploration of a stilted, crumbling relationship is at times painful to read and the whole familial set-up is perfectly illustrated in Veraguth's great masterpiece painting. In contrast, descriptions of the Rosshalde estate are fluid and enticing making the gardens seem like the only warm oasis in a chilly life. For me, Rosshalde was a depressing novel although not unpleasant to read. I did find 'the tragedy' to be too overblown and almost Dickens-like in its heartstring tugging, but I imagine this was in the expected style of a century ago.
