No More Fairy Tales is a thought-provoking, intense anthology of tales each linked by the theme of their potential solutions to the climate crisis. What I particularly liked about the collection is that, while no one story claims to have all the answers, the way in which they link together meant I came away from reading the book with a sense that we might still have a chance to avoid total disaster. The myriad ideas range from planting sea kelp forests and mangroves to resurrecting coral reefs and protecting whale populations. There are examples of dedicated individual efforts and of steering corporate mindsets, and all these approaches together might just do the trick.
I think everyone could get behind some of the ideas mooted here, even if not all of them appeal to every reader, and a central idea of us all having our part to play is very powerful. …

I think everyone could get behind some of the ideas mooted here, even if not all of them appeal to every reader, and a central idea of us all having our part to play is very powerful. Overall, I did find the anthology to be a bit hit and miss, albeit with far more hits than misses. My own particular favourites included the tale of successive generations of a family marine preservation enterprise, another of a woman running her own cleaning business who goes on an awful date, one about a self-help group for people overwhelmed by climate anxiety, and another with a beautiful concept of spiral farms to regenerate desertified land. I also loved the very first story about an emerging AI and its incredible energy storage system. I understand that all the stories are firmly rooted in real-life possibilities so I wasn't given to thinking that these were nice ideas, but ultimately pipe dreams. Instead, the more I read, the more I wondered why many of these solutions weren't already racing ahead. Hopefully No More Fairy Tales will inspire great leaps in will and progress that we need right now.
