Another fabulous Season's War novel!

This third novel in the Season's War series hit the ground running and pretty much didn't let up until its final page. Spring Blight is certainly a thrilling adventure! I loved how Olena Nikitin takes readers to explore a different region of Cornovii in each novel and this time we go to the far South of this kingdom. The differing locations allow for new characters to be introduced into the central narrative which keeps the story intriguing with unexpected diversions. Spring Blight is also the raciest of the novels so far with a fair few sexual scenes. Season's War is definitely fantasy fiction for over 18s!

It was interesting for me to see how Ina and Mar's relationship is still growing on an emotional level too. Ina still struggles with trust for much of the story and this gave their interactions a convincing depth. Both Ina and Mar have made assumptions about what they believe the other wants from the relationship so there are these issues to resolve too. On top of that, of course, Ina is tasked with saving the world again. There's never a day off for our Royal Witch.
Spring Blight sees a scarily plausible storyline of religious fanaticism taking root in a land blighted by crops that won't grow, leaving farmers and villagers facing a potential famine. This, for me, reflected parts of the real world right now so I could easily understand how the desperate people might turn to anyone promising a resolution. For Ina, seeing her estranged family caught up in the disaster is particularly fraught as their cruelty towards her as a child has left her adult self with plenty of mental scars.
There's so much going in Spring Blight that I never found myself in a dull moment. I didn't get at all befuddled by the various narrative threads either. I especially loved Velka and Daro's side narrative, and seeing Velka growing in confidence too. It was really good for her self-esteem that her particular skills were vital.
I spent several days happily entranced by Spring Blight and am delighted that the Season's War series is keeping up its high standards. Now I can't wait to see what the Summer brings!
