Beautifully evokes Van Gogh's art

I adored Kate Wilson's previous poetry collection, One Night In January, and having also recently read Caroline Cauchi's novel, Mrs Van Gogh, I was keen to experience a new perspective on Vincent's art through reading The Impossibility Of Love. The collection comprises poems, each one inspired by one of Vincent Van Gogh's paintings. I impressed myself by being able to recognise several through their poems, although I did have to look up the majority online. It was interesting, however, to read each poem by itself first, then to view an image of the relevant painting before reading its poem again.

Kate's ability to capture Vincent's artistic style really impressed me and I felt, at times, as though The Impossibility Of Love seemed like a collaboration between the two artists, one writing in paint, the other painting with words. I imagine that this collection will particularly appeal to Van Gogh fans, but I appreciated it for its gorgeously vivid imagery. Even when I did not immediately recognise the painting that had inspired a certain poem, I could still envisage its main themes through the descriptive language. It's a beautiful booklet that inspired me to spend time admiring Van Gogh's work again, remembering the few I have been lucky enough to see 'for real', and also encouraged me to mull over the universal themes and emotions that Kate evokes in her poetry.
