Deep Space Nine is forced to curtail entry to the wormhole due to increased graviton emissions, and an air of biting tension settles over the station. This anxiety leads to the murder of an Edemian religious leader, Commander Benjamin Sisko and Security Chief Odo realize they face a larger problem. Soon Sisko and Odo have more lifeless bodies on their hands and a killer who strikes without motive. Then, both the Edemians and Cardassians arrive threatening to destroy the station unless the murderer is given to them for retribution. In order to save Deep Space Nine and stop the killing, Odo must try to destroy a powerful assassin who is the only link to his mysterious past.

I am new to Star Trek fiction, but watching DS9 is what sealed my fandom of the franchise, so I was very interested in reading this early book. David notes in the introduction that he didn't have much to go on: only a few early scripts and the show's bible. Looking back on the book 30 years later, it is actually striking how much David gets "right" in terms of the portrayal of the characters striking through (even though so much of that portrayal happened for years after this book was written). So in that sense it is a cracking good read. My only problem is the unsympathetic portrayal of Keiko -- Rosalind Chao clearly gave the character more depth than what happens here. But the story itself is great and given that it was written so early in the series, it's a great book.
