An important book that prioritizes social commentary over literary nuance

A very important book. Combines elements of journalism with fiction, e.g. with footnote citations to government studies and statistics reports, in a creative, though at times ham-fisted way.
As a piece of fiction, it suffers from flat, underdeveloped characters and unresolved plot points. The central magical-realistic premise goes absolutely nowhere and is particularly disappointing. However, Cho's portrayal of the "hidden" and often-trivialized mental calculus of young women—mothers, working professionals, etc.—in South Korea is digestible and and accessible.
