A fascinating blend of memoir and career guide

I was genuinely impressed with how much useful and pertinent information Tiffany Haas has managed to cram into her book, Waiting In The Wings, all whilst also writing in a warm and chatty style that I thought makes this an entertaining read for potential performers and musical theater fans alike. There are so many aspects to embarking on a theater career that I had never even considered before and I could easily imagine that the sheer drudgery of traipsing from audition to audition to audition would soon be enough to put off all but the most determined candidates.

I appreciated Haas' balance within Waiting In The Wings. She does, of course, recount her exhilaration at achieving roles, especially that of Glinda in Wicked, the Musical for which she is most well known, yet she also clearly demonstrates just how difficult it was to reach that level of success and, indeed, to maintain it in such a competitive industry. I hadn't realised, for example, that continuing to attend workshops and training classes is essential for experienced performers as well as those new to the profession. Hass also gives her opinions on quandaries including whether to actually head for Broadway or remain in a regional theater career, how and when to approach agents and managers, at what stage of one's career joining the actors' union, Equity, might be appropriate, and she even has tips on less conventional ways for budding performers to get their faces in front of creative teams.
All in all, Waiting In The Wings is a fascinating blend of memoir and self help career guide which gave me an even greater level of respect for those people who dedicate their lives to chasing dreams of theatrical success
