Stephanie Jane recenzis Devil's Chimney de Adam Lyndon
Satisfyingly complex crime fiction

Devil's Chimney is a taut, expertly plotted crime fiction novel which felt convincingly authentic from start to finish. Its author, Adam Lyndon, has been a serving UK police officer for more than two decades and that experience really shines through in the details of how the police work and interact with each other. I loved how Lyndon incorporates local culture and history into his novel too. I lived just outside Eastbourne for several years and recognised many aspects of the town, both the genteel areas and the less salubrious, and Lyndon's eye for detail here also adds to the overall sense of reality.
There's a strong cast of characters on both sides of the law, very few of whom can be taken at face value which kept me alert as I tried to unravel the case before Barnes drew his conclusions. I appreciated that he isn't a generic drink-addled, divorced …

There's a strong cast of characters on both sides of the law, very few of whom can be taken at face value which kept me alert as I tried to unravel the case before Barnes drew his conclusions. I appreciated that he isn't a generic drink-addled, divorced and cynical detective. His wide-eyed naivete makes for some great scenes especially with senior detective Cathy, his mentor, who does like a dram or two. The case itself is satisfying complex with a compelling pace and suitably breathtaking final chapters. I found myself glued to Devil's Chimney throughout two days, desperate to find out what was going to happen, but also not wanting this book to end too soon because I was so enjoying reading it!
