Zainab Takes New York is a charming coming of age tale which is as much a love story to New York City as it is a romantic tale in itself. Zainab herself is very much the innocent abroad, discovering her way around city life and also learning about the woman she will become. Navigating conflicting advice from friends and family is fraught for anyone, but Zainab also carries with her the voices of three generations of her grandmothers and I loved how Attah weaves their individual characters into this novel. Women are often guided by beliefs and values passed down from mother to daughter across generations so to see this in its magical incarnation for Zainab was a particularly memorable feature of the story. I found Zainab Takes New York to be a lighter read than Attah's previous wonderful novel, The Deep Blue Between, and it took a while to get going which was a little discouraging. I would pitch the story as New Adult or older Young Adult so, at times, it did feel too young for me, but it's still a heartwarming and engaging tale.
