I loved reading The Sound Of Your Soul and am very grateful to Rachel's Random Resources for giving me this review opportunity. The novel is set in a near-future dystopian London which Cookson poetically describes with a true artist's eye. I was impressed by her prose style. I would describe The Sound Of Your Soul as somewhere between Terry Tyler and Mhani Alaoui, but with hints of Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere and George Orwell's 1984. I hope that's tempting your literary tastebuds?

Artist Cally Dune is an interesting character whose quirky view on the world keeps her somewhat distanced from other people while, at the same time, meaning she finds herself drawn into situations that many folks I think would shy away from. I could often empathise with her social awkwardness. Her interactions with her husband, Simon, manage to stay just on the cute side of adorable although his constant facetiousness …

Artist Cally Dune is an interesting character whose quirky view on the world keeps her somewhat distanced from other people while, at the same time, meaning she finds herself drawn into situations that many folks I think would shy away from. I could often empathise with her social awkwardness. Her interactions with her husband, Simon, manage to stay just on the cute side of adorable although his constant facetiousness would irritate me intensely if I had to live with it! My favourite character, in a love-to-hate way, though was the ghastly President with his daily 'let's do it, people' broadcasts. Brilliantly cringeworthy and a scarily plausible possibility.

I don't want to risk spoilers in talking about the plot, but will say that the narrative kept me curious and entranced throughout. I was always intrigued to see what each new page would bring. Cookson's weaving in of spiritual threads is sympathetically and convincingly well done. The Sound Of Your Soul is an excellent debut novel with a strong sense of place and compelling, imaginative premise.
