Stephanie Jane recenzis Double Dog Dare de C S McDonald
An entertaining read

There is a bittersweet sense of closure to this third novel in C S McDonald's Owl's Nest Mysteries series which left me wondering if the trilogy as it stands will be all we see of Alexa Owl and Detective Bobby Starr's unconventional working relationship. I do hope not because I have enjoyed revisiting their Pittsburgh for another time-travelling cosy mystery in Double Dog Dare. Although Alexa doesn't spend as much time in historic Pittsburgh this time round due to pressing needs in her own time, I did still giggle at the image of her and Starr kitted out in fabulous 1960s style complete with brightly striped pants and a de riguer headband. Some of the descriptions of then-fashionable apartment decor choices are truly horrific too!

I did manage to work out the 'who' of the 1960s murder mystery element before it was revealed to us, but not all of the 'how'. It was fun seeing Detective Starr trying to channel his inner Alexa in order to work out what he should do next in order to solve the case. The hitch-hiking time traveller provided a different angle to the previous Owl's Nest Mysteries novels too. Previously I had appreciated Alexa's attempts to adapt to their present time, now they had to swiftly start coping with hers.
I love the different layers of intertwining narrative threads, the humour and the perceptive detail in McDonald's writing. These aspects make the books entertaining and rewarding to read and I feel that Double Dog Dare is a great new addition to the series.
