Stephanie Jane recenzis Hero de Boyd Taylor
Good use of the Austin, Texas location

I was attracted to Boyd Taylor's Donnie Ray Cuinn series by their striking cover designs and also because the novels have an Austin, Texas setting. I have enjoyed visiting this city twice for its excellent music and Alternative vibe. Taylor makes good use of the setting in Hero. It was fun for me to remember some of the locations - tourist traps and lesser-known spots - as well as making mental notes for any future trip!
Hero is essentially a political thriller. It is an exciting read maintaining a pretty good pace throughout other than when slowed by a few overlong information dumps. I appreciated that Taylor has taken the time to create a fleshed out character for his lead, together with an interesting and diverse supporting cast. Donnie himself is not a particularly likeable person - essentially an overgrown chauvinistic child! - but we get to see why he has turned out this way and also to glimpse him beginning to mature and take responsibility for his actions. Hopefully this thread will continue through the series. Apoplectic politician Payne is great fun to read about and, scarily, I imagine not too far from the truth of that style of 'entitled' Republican. A bully thwarted is always entertaining! Mexican law student Cecilia is far more than just a token love interest. I had to grab my dictionary a couple of times to translate her Spanish comments and liked the authenticity imparted by this device.
Overall I, I enjoyed reading Hero. The tight plot is well-planned with a satisfying conclusion so Hero could be read as a standalone novel although am looking forward to discovering further books in the series.
