Always Noel is the fourth in Kathleen Shoop's 'Tis The Season series of Christmas stories. This one is a short novella which I zipped through in under an hour. It is set in late-1930s Oregon, rather than 1880s Pittsburgh like The Tin Whistle and Cinder Bella, and I loved that Shoop lets us know that Always Noel was inspired by her grandparents lives. The story takes place in the week leading up to Christmas Day and is quite the emotional rollercoaster as young Jane sees her planned future denied to her, despite her best efforts, because of a lack of money. The narrative itself is simple and sweet, and what I appreciated most about this story was how Shoop embellishes it with so much researched detail about how the townspeople would have gone about celebrating their Christmas at this time.
