Lovely read, although a bit old-fashioned. I read this to our youngest child. It took some time to get into, because of the slightly archaic style and word-choices. Chapters describing the setting in particular suffered from this, while chapters with a lot of dialogue and/or action read much more smoothly.

The story is told by Hans, thirty years after the events, and is about him, his father - printer and bookseller - , and his friends during the Franco-Dutch War, the occupation by French forces, and the period shortly afterwards. The title ‘city in the storm’ also refers to one of the main events in the story. Historical figures like Louis the XIV, the De Witt brothers, William III, Bernhard von Galen - Bommen Berend - pass by, as well as the use of what we call the (old) Hollandse Waterlinie - a military defence line consisting of a combination …

Today's find at a small thrift store. The title caught my eye: although in #Utrecht, the book appeared to be #Frisian. And indeed, it contains #folktales in Frisian, told by Steven de Bruin, last of the storytellers in a family of boaters and people from what we call 'De Heide' ('Heath').

A hiking guide to 'Camino Bonifacio', a modern pilgrim's path, a long-distance trail from Dorestad …

Great read until now. I randomly read some parts, and then started from the beginning. The start is close to home - #Utrecht - , and the end is close to my origins - #Dokkum in #Friesland. Although the religious bits of Bonifatius are of no interest to me, all the historic information about this person and the places part of the trail make a great read. Currently going over the maps, creating a #bike ride close to the trail route, of about 360-400km.

Second #CookBook from restaurant De #Veldkeuken in #Amelisweerd, #Utrecht.

Full of #recipes from their restaurant, made from #local ingredients. #Bread, cakes, quiches etc from their own #bakery that includes their own grain mill.

I received this during our #Sinterklaas festivity. I had no specific wishes, so fun surprise to receive this, after having made loads of the recipes from their first book.
