#cycling and #running #training theory and practice book by Kees Rootjes, from our #PublicLibrary. Doorstopper; I'll probably just leaf through it instead of reading it all. ;)

Arjan Boltjes volas legi De filosofie van de heuvel de Ilja Leonard Pfeijffer
#SecondHand book from #Pfeijffer, describing his #cycling trip from Leiden to Rome, and if I read the reviews, covering more than just the cycling part. A book that our #PublicLibrary did not have

Superficial listing of more or less interesting European cycling routes

As I leafed through this book, it struck me as too superficial a listing of #cycling routes, some of which certainly look interesting. But the further description of these routes, the lack of a route map or at least some geographical context where the route is located, the haphazard collection of photos - apparently the author has used a big pile of stock photos plus pictures from tourist and cycling organisations - makes one easily ask the question: why was this published as a book? A list of blog posts would probably have sufficed, especially if you then refer to the cycling organisations that organise these routes, on whose websites you can then find detailed information per route; the actual information you need. Plus, knowing the route name you can probably also find cyclists who have already ridden the route, have written about it, have practical information for you, and …

Inspiring journey, uninspiring writing

8500 km of cycling in about half a year. That sounded awesome, so I picked this up during our own #cycling vacation in a local bookstore in Deventer. And I still think this entire trip or anything like it is worth the time and effort. The sheer distance and height difference tackled are inspiring, and the setting - the USA, car-centric country number one in my mind - seems quite a challenge. And it was, including desert landscape, the aforementioned mountains, empty roads. Sadly, the writing style is not what I had hoped for. Only little of the story drew me in, with an occasional anecdote interesting enough to truly entertain. The rest left me mostly untouched. At least it was an easy/fast read. And, plenty of cycling to think about it. Yet, where am I going to find six months to go cycling!?
Arjan Boltjes volas legi Amerikanen fietsen niet... de Gijs van Middelkoop
By far the best #cycling -related book I ever bought. Time and again I go through it when something needs fixing. It has bookmarks and notes throughout, after all these years; component codes of bike parts from my bikes scribbled in the book's diagrams; grease stains on frequently consulted pages.
Adding it after all this time because it was on my table after using it yesterday.

Rereading this after seeing @eeen@mastodon.social post on finishing the Pacific Crest Trail. #PacificCrestTrail Some day I'd like to do one of the big North American trails myself, most likely one of the #cycling trails.
